Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart (2020/430 pages). Winner of the Booker Prize 2020. The 2020 Booker-winning novel could have been called Agnes. The mother of the title character has a tragic nobility to her; you will her not to succumb to drink. Yes, she has the catastrophic selfishness and neglectfulness of an alcoholic, but in her moments of sobriety she seems almost inspirational. She feels painfully real, which is no surprise when you know that Douglas Stuart’s mother was called Agnes. Douglas Stuart’s Shuggie Bain lays bare the ruthlessness of poverty, the limits of love, and the hollowness of pride, a blistering debut by a brilliant writer with a powerful and important story to tell. To be presented by Graziella Viglione
The Book Club (Modern Fiction Reading Group) meets at 10.30 on the last Tuesday of every month (except July, August and December or when our meeting clashes with another event) at the Circolo dei Lettori in via Bogino 9. On entering the courtyard of via Bogino 9, follow the red carpet, then turn left. In front of you will be a short flight of steps and a large glass door with an answerphone on the left. Key in 1115 followed by the bell symbol. Once inside the building follow the wide staircase to the first floor and ask for the Book Club.
There is no longer any requirement to register your attendance with the Circolo dei Lettori, so just turn up on the day. Please contact Rosemary for more information or if you’re interested in joining the email list (rapvine@gmail.com).
